Kent holds a bachelor’s degree in ecology from the University of Illinois and a master’s degree in zoology from Southern Illinois University. He has almost completed his Ph.D. in educational leadership from the University of South Carolina.
After completing his master’s degree, Kent worked for many years for an environmental consulting firm in Aiken. As a project manager and environmental scientist, he worked on numerous environmental impact studies and ecological risk assessments. In addition, he worked on projects involving zoning, greenspace, conservation easements, and storm and wastewater issues. Much of that work was performed at SRS. This expertise articulates perfectly with the knowledge needed on City Council.
Kent is currently the head of the biology department at Aiken Technical College. It’s the largest program in General Education at the College, with a staff of 12, extensive facilities, and approximately 700 students per semester. If you’ve followed higher education at all lately you know that our colleges and universities have had to manage their budgets like never before, and Kent knows how to watch every penny.
You may also know Kent from his downtown tours. Kent owns and operates Aiken Ghost Tours, a fun and exciting tour of downtown Aiken. The tours have been featured on ETV, in Easy Street Magazine, and in the local press. Although the tour has great stories about Aiken’s myths and legends, it is mostly historical. Kent is a lover of Aiken’s history. Since Kent knows where Aiken has been in the past, he is in a unique position to lead it into the future.
Kent is married to the lovely and talented Cynthia, who owns and operates Cynthia Cubbage Training, LLC, an equestrian training business. Kent and Cynthia have a 2-year old daughter, Lucy. The Cubbages share their home with several four-legged members of the family, all of which are rescues. This reflects one of their “pet” causes – animal rescue and welfare.
